How to Choose An Outdoor Gas Griddles?

Before you make a final decision concerning an outdoor gas griddle, keep these key aspects in mind so you can choose the best one for your needs.

Obviously, the size of the griddle cooking surface influences how many mouths you can feed, and where.

Some are large enough they can accommodate up to a hundred people and require dedicated space. Smaller ones are more portable and easier to store away.

Before you buy, ask yourself, are you looking for a griddle for large parties, for small family use or just yourself?

Number of Burners

Griddles have cold or hot zones due to their burners. Having additional burners below your griddle surface will allow you heat the complete surface area more thoroughly and faster. This can be important if you wish to cook a large helping of foods at the same time.

With more burners, you get more temperature control over the griddle . With more than one burner, you have a lot of options, however, if you aren’t cooking a ton of food, you may just need the basics.

Gas griddle surfaces can be made from a variety of materials. Chrome or Stainless steel griddles are excellent choices, as these are very resistant to the number one enemy, rust damage.

Cheaper options can be made from aluminum or regular steel, but you should check to see if there’s an added coating of heat-resistant material, which will extend the life of the griddle surface. Thick metal surfaces are much better than thin ones, because they tend to give better heat distribution.

Temperature Control and Ease of Use

Even the best griddles need to be watched closely, or you’ll end up with burnt food. You should look for griddles with easy to use dials to control the heat level.

Whether you have a large griddle or a small one, being able to move it easily, is a plus. You might want to relocate it to another area for a party, or pack it up for a camping trip. Some griddles have handles and wheels that make moving them easier.

Easy to Clean

No one wants to spend tons of time cleaning their griddle. Look for options that have a good grease management system that may include a removable grease pan or grease cup.

Your Budget

Lastly, keep an ideal budget in mind when searching for your perfect gas griddle. The best way to determine your ideal budget is to estimate how much you’ll be using the griddle in the weeks and months to come.

Best Outdoor Flat Top Gas Grill Griddles Reviews of 2022

1.  Best Overall – Camp Chef Flat Top Grill

Camp Chef Flat Top Grill

Why you’ll love this:

This is the ultimate full size flat top grilling machine. Its 600 square inches of cooking space are more than enough to feed even the largest gatherings while not going overboard and making it hard to store.Backing it up is the power, separated into four amazing 12, 000 BTU grilling zones that let you adjust the temperature for cooking up to four different things at different temperatures at once.

The top is wide and easy to clean, as are the convenient side tables and mounted grease trap. It’s perfect for anybody who wants to step up their outdoor cooking game.

What We Liked

  • Versatile cooking machine. This flat top grill is both huge and powerful, with four 12, 000 BTU burners providing distinct heat zones across its spacious 600 square inch primary grilling surface. The large size and even, modular heating means you can cook up to four different types of food at the same time, making hammering out huge and varied meals a snap.
  • Amazing cooktop. The cast iron cooktop ensures even heating and the ability to cook and sear just about anything. It’s easily cleaned as well, being naturally nonstick once seasoned, and is even removable so the griddle can be used as a traditional propane grill when needed.
  • Easy to use. This griddle comes with a number of quality of life features that should be welcome to any seasoned home chef. The arrangement of the grease trap ensures it catches everything and is easy to empty, while the expensive side tables allow you a lot of room to place bowls or plates and prep sauces and the like for later. Rounding things out, the temperature knobs are top notch and make it easy to accurately adjust the griddle’s temperature in each zone.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Bulky. This griddle is huge, and not just in its cooking surface. This can make it hard to find a good place for or even store when not in use.
  • Requires careful storage and maintenance. Cast iron is a great surface for cooking, but the cast iron cooktop can rust if not well taken care of. This is an issue given the difficulties with storage the griddle has.

It heats food evenly, so there are no worries of hot or cold spots, with its unique and effective heat dispersing design. The surface is pre-seasoned, with an all-natural, 100% plant-oil based non-stick seasoning ready to use from the word go.

Additional features of the Camp Chef griddle are adjustable leg levelers, roller wheels, and two, large folding side shelves.

The Camp Chef griddle is built to be long-lasting and is very easy to clean. The grease tray and a catch bucket make a useful and effective grease management system. This griddle might be a little smaller than the Blackstone, but it can handle just as much food.

2. Best Budget Choice – Blackstone Original 17-Inch Tabletop Gas Griddle

Why you’ll love this:

Some things are best cooked on a griddle, but you don’t always have the space for some huge, unwieldy cooktop.Whether you’re camping and want to travel light, or just don’t have much storage space in your home or apartment, this compact griddle is perfect for packing away to use later.

But that doesn’t mean it’s a slouch. With 267 square inches of cooking space, you can still cook a full breakfast for two (or even four in a pinch!) and easily clean up and tuck away the Blackstone for later.

What We Liked

  • Great for travel. This portable griddle is easy to pack away and store in a trunk or even a backpack if needed, and provides awesome cooking power for such a tiny package.
  • Efficient cooking. With 267 square inches of cooking space and an amazing 12, 000 BTUh burner (H-shaped for more even cooking!) this griddle can quickly and easily cook entire meals even better than a lot of home stovetops.
  • Excellent cooktop. The cold rolled steel cooktop combines durability and even heating with a relative ease of maintenance compared to other materials (like cast iron). This helps with the model being a solid travel cooktop, as you don’t need to worry as much about it getting wet, and it can be easily cleaned with just the wipe of a damp cloth.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Awkward lid design. The lid is constructed weirdly and stands up a little too high. This can make the griddle feel unbalanced, especially in windy environments. This Blackstone griddle is best used with something to prop it up against at the back.

As the name indicates, this table top gas griddle is portable and handy for small spaces, but it is also affordable. With a cooking area of 267 square inches it may be small in size, but it heats up very fast, making it easy and quick to whip up lunch.

This compact Blackstone griddle is super easy to clean as well; just wipe it down with a paper towel and empty the grease catcher. For quick breakfasts or just a nice steak for yourself, this is the best compact griddle for small spaces or for those on a budget.

3. Best Grill and Griddle Combo – Royal Gourmet Portable Propane Gas Grill and Griddle Combo

Royal Gourmet Portable

Why you’ll love this:

Never have to choose between griddle cooking and grilling again with this combination grill. Each side offers a respectable 292 square inches of cooking space, and have two distinct cooking zones apiece to boot giving you massive versatility.

The power is nothing to sneeze at either, with 12, 000 BTU burners that provide even heating no matter which side they’re used with.

And one of the best parts: the legs fold down to make storing and transporting easier! It’s great for carting around to parties and events to show up your friends.

What We Liked

  • Double duty design. Many griddles are convertible, allowing them to be transformed from a flat top griddle to a grill as you please. But this Royal Gourmet model is relatively unique, with it being split into two halves: one a flat top, and the other a grill. This lets you do a lot at once, or simply use half of it as needed instead of needing to bother with flipping it.
  • Powerful burners. 48, 000 total BTU spread across four powerful burners are absolutely perfect for a grill of this size, allowing even heating across the 584 square inches of cooking space.
  • Convenience. Everything about the cart is designed to make your life easier, from the sturdy frame and easy rolling wheels to the very nice, wide side tables that make prep work a snap. Not only that, but the grease channel design makes cleanup easier and the tool hooks give you somewhere to hang your tools without constantly worrying about getting them (or your side tables!) dirty.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Struggles in grass. Small caster wheels like this are great for a lot of things, and excel on flat surfaces in ways larger wheels don’t. But dragging wheels like this across grass is a pain, as they can get hung on pretty much anything. That makes this a definitively “patio based” griddle.
  • Split design isn’t all good. The added convenience of the split design is tempered by how much it reduces the overall cooking area on each side. You’re only getting a bit under 300 square inches of cooking space per side, which means it’s less useful for preparing large, varied meals than other griddles.

The Royal Gourmet grill and griddle combo is the perfect option for the backyard chef that wants the convenience of a grill and griddle in one handy appliance. This handy grill/griddle combo features one grill grate and a flat top griddle that you switch between, like hibachi, depending on your menu.

Getting started with this griddle/grill is a snap with the handy push button electronic ignition. This Royal Gourmet grill also features folding side shelves, utensil hooks, and there’s even a bottle opener, so you never have to worry about being thirsty while you’re cooking. This griddle is perfect for every-day use or large outdoor events.

A handy grease channel makes this griddle/grill combo easy to clean and removable drip pans keep your cooking space free of messy grease.

This griddle comes with a folding frame cart with sturdy caster wheels which makes it easy to move around your backyard. This is the best outdoor gas griddle if you’re looking for versatility.

4. Best for Beginners – Cuisinart CGG-501 Gourmet Gas Griddle

Cuisinart CGG-501

Why you’ll love it:

While only average in size, this griddle makes up for it in raw power and flexibility, with a pair of 10, 000 BTU burners to ensure high heat and even cooking every single time. The lightweight and compact design also makes it perfect for camping and hiking. It’s only a little bit larger than a lunchbox, and easily fits inside of a backpack to trek around with.

This combination of power, light weight, and compact size is rare to find and should be pounced on!

What we liked

  • Compact and lightweight. This griddle is perfect for travel. It weighs almost nothing and fits into most bags, while still providing an excellent 285 square inches of cooking space for you to use. You can prepare pretty much any meal on this griddle with no issue, and feed large families as long as you don’t mind making a few batches.
  • Easy to use. This griddle has instant ignition, two adjustable temperature zones, and a great pair of burners that provide 10, 000 BTUh apiece to the two sides of your grill.
  • Budget friendly. This griddle is cheaper than you’d expect for a griddle of this type

What we didn’t like

  • Temperature zones are often wasted. The dual burner design is neat, but the surface is a bit too small for you to be able to easily keep everything separated between the two zones, lowering the usability of the griddle.
  • No lid. Not having a lid not only makes maintenance more difficult, as it’s more likely to get banged up or take on moisture, but also reduces its utility when cooking. You can’t slowly steam or simmer anything on the eye without being able to close the lid and trap the moisture inside.

Now, this is one of the most compact appliances on our list. However, compact doesn’t mean lower quality, in this case. We are talking about a Cuisinart here – a brand that has retained its remarkable reputation for years both on the US market and worldwide.

You may think that this lightweight griddle can only feed two people, but in reality, it can feed an entire family!

This powerful griddle is designed to look perfect on your patio or on your kitchen counter. It’s not demanding in maintenance and is easy to use and keep clean especially since it works as an indoor grills.

5. Best Tabletop – Blackstone Tabletop Grill – 22 Inch Portable Gas Griddle

Why you’ll love it:

This enormous portable gas griddle is enough to feed even the hungriest gatherings on the road. With 330 square inches of grilling space, you need more power as well…which is why this griddle has not one, but two12, 000 BTU stainless steel burners that can be controlled independently for maximum versatility.

As an added bonus it’s easy to clean and very compact, so you can store it away just about anywhere. It’s absolutely perfect for RVing and other long camping trips, so you can cook in style wherever you are

What we liked

  • Jumbo sized cooking. This grill is massive for something that is meant to be portable…and that’s a god thing! 330 square inches of cooking space is great for grilling on the go, and makes this a must have for family camping trips. It being so huge also means it has room to fit not one, but two independently adjustable 12, 000 BTU burners, which is rare in a portable griddle.
  • Excellent construction. Everything about this griddle is built to last, and the cold rolled steel griddle top is especially good. Not only does it conduct heat well and make it easy to cook, it’s easy to clean and can be wiped off with a snap. The rear grease management system helps with this, and ensures drippings don’t get everywhere while you’re cooking.

What we didn’t like

  • No hood. The lack of any kind of hood makes this one a bit harder to take care of, as you’ll need to provide some kind of cover to ensure it doesn’t get wet and start to rust.

This 22″ model from Blackstone is the perfect middle size griddle for the back yard or apartment patio. It features a larger cooking surface than the smaller 17” model and measures in at 330 square inches of cooking space.

This griddle features two, H-style stainless steel burners, which produce total of 24,000 BTU of heat, a cold-rolled steel griddle top, and adjustable heat zones. This griddle is identical to the 17” model, except in the cooking area and BTU production.
