If you’ve never owned one before, finding the best electric smoker can be half the battle.

There’s a lot to choose from the best smoker reviews out there. From price to features, this appliance come in all shapes and sizes–whether you just want a basic, inexpensive model or really want to go all out.

The first question you’ll want to ask yourself is if an electric smoker is right for you.

The great thing about electric smokers is the simple convenience of an electric unit. For some people, the time and effort involved in pellet smoking from a pellet smoker is just too much. Preparing and using a traditional offset smoker and propane smoker can take most of a day to get a cut of meat done right.

An electric powered smoker cuts out much of the prep time needed for traditional smoking and typically doesn’t require as close of monitoring; for example, you’ll be following fewer steps on smoking in an electric smoker. 

Controlling the Temperature

When shopping for a smoker, one of the first things you’ll want to consider is the temperature control.

What We Liked

  • Digital: Digital temperature readout is clear and very easy to read, with easy to understand and press buttons. All your standard options are here: temperature up and down, power on and off, temperature readout toggle, timer toggle, and meat thermometer toggle. This makes it easy to tell at a glance what you’re doing and to cycle through the different temperature readouts to determine whether you need to adjust either your estimated cooking time or the temperature of the smoker itself.
  • Front Window: This may be entirely a matter of preference, and it does introduce a little bit of extra heat bleed into the smoker, but I like having a front window, which most of these electric smokers lack. There are some things you can only tell by seeing it, and for most that means opening the door all the way. A meat thermometer is all well and good, unless it has been pushed out of the meat by shrinkage and is no longer giving an accurate core temperature.
  • Great Design: Everything about the construction and design is good, from the already mentioned front window, to the double insulated walls, door latch, and even the grease tray positioning and security. The whole package is very well put together and should hold up to repeated use for many years. There’s only one real exception, which I’ll get to below.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Height: This thing is short, especially for its capacity. It’s less than 3 feet high, which can make it a bit of a pain to get stuff in and out of without risking dropping it. I’m not a very tall guy (a couple of inches shorter than the average) but even I look at how awkwardly the man in one of the promotional pictures is standing while removing his ribs and sympathize with him. This thing could desperately use some legs to raise the height another six inches or so. Consider setting this on a makeshift platform of sorts you’re not worried about it falling off of to make things easier.

This is an extremely inexpensive electric smoker, and is perfect as a low risk introduction to using an electric smoker for all your smoking needs. 

This is a great all round model, but very heavy for its size and held back by a few weird design choices.

What we liked

  • Heavy Duty: This is a very sturdy stainless steel smoker, with double insulated walls and door for superior heat retention. One of the standout features here are the heavy duty door latches (two of them, one nearer the top and the other closer to the bottom) that keep the door secure. This not only prevents it from slamming open if jostled or something, but also makes it a bit more child safe than other models, as it is difficult for them to open it if they try to play with it unsupervised.
  • Temperature: The insulation makes this an excellent, energy efficient smoker with an adjustable temperature and easy to read (fog resistant) temperature gauge front and center on the door. It has a 1200 watt element for very powerful heating ability.
  • Trays: Drop trays and included moisture pan are secured in the bottom of the smoker, but easily removable for dumping and cleaning along with the wood chip tray. The grease tray can even be accessed from the outside so you can dump it without losing smoke, though the wood chip and moisture trays require you to open the door.

What we didn’t like

  • Temperature Knob: The temperature knob itself is fine, being a fairly standard affair for electric grills or griddles, turning to any temperature in the range of the element. The issue is placement: directly next to where the plug feeds into the element, which is at the bottom of the smoker.

This makes it a bit of a pain to adjust once it’s already (you need to put your hands and face pretty close to a hot device) and is not friendly to people who have issues crouching down, such as someone with back or knee problems.

What we liked

  • Wood Feeder: This unit is designed to run on bisquettes; little pucks of wood for smoking. They plug into a handy little feeder on the side that just drops and conveys them into the smoker as needed. Bradley is pretty much the only brand that sues these, but they’re quite an efficient way to keep the wood flowing for steady smoke, and no hassle from you. While other units allow the use of wood chips, The Bradley’s consistent feed of wood to the smoker really helps create an authentically smoked flavor.
  • Control: Digital temperature control is easy to read and adjust, going up to 280 degrees Fahrenheit, and with very clearly labeled buttons, with options for both an “oven mode” and smoking mode. If you prefer ovens, consider buying an outdoor pizza oven.

What we didn’t like

  • Heat Retention: This smoker looks fine on the outside, but suffers from being a very underpowered machine. The element is only 500 watts, about half the average for an electric smoker.

This means it already struggles to heat up the interior, but worse struggles a lot to maintain temperature once it gets there as well. High wind is especially this smoker’s bane, as users report that on windy days this thing barely works at all. If your home is very wind protected it should be fine, but it’s hard to justify buying it with a flaw like that because of the blow.

What we liked

What we didn’t like

  • Unfortunately the construction is not nearly as good as many others here, with only a single walled insulation design. It’s passable, but has notably poorer heat retention than many other electric smokers around. Still, for the price it’s hard to complain too much as the investment is fairly small and will return its value pretty quickly.

What we liked

  • Heat Retention: This smoker has a fairly weak element compared to others (only 400 watts), but that’s just fine for how small this thing is. It makes great use of this heat, sealing it inside and getting every ounce of use out of it. It’s easy to tell, given how cool the exterior remains (warm to the touch, but not uncomfortable) even when it’s literally smoking hot inside.
  • Maneuverable: Being set on four solid caster wheels means you can wheel it around as needed (good for crowded decks or patios) and lock the wheels when you don’t need it to move.
  • Simple: This one basically consists of a door, a few racks, and a temperature dial. This makes it easy to use, but unlike some of the other “beginner friendly” models below, this one still allows a more experience smoker to control the temperature to where it needs to be.

What we didn’t like

  • Price: Worth every penny given how well it performs (about $100 cheaper than the larger models above), it’s kind of hard to see where this price comes from based on the materials used and lack of accoutrements.
    If you’re someone who is bothered by something costing more than it seems like the construction and materials should run you, regardless of performance, potentially one to avoid.

What we liked

  • This is a high performance, very thick and sturdy smoker. The all over stainless steel construction is double walled for added insulation and makes this electric smoker very durable in the long term, easily able to last you years with minimal maintenance.
  • The slide locking front seals in smoke, and the interior is fairly spacious for the compact size, with a 23 lb and roughly 160 square inch capacity per each of the two sturdy stainless steel shelves.
  • The smoker is easy to use, and specialized completely for cold smoking, with a temperature range of 100 to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. This combined with its excellent seal and insulation produces a moist, perfectly smoked cut of meat every single time.

What we didn’t like

  • The main issue with this smoker is that same singlemindedness. A lot of smokers can be used for quick smoking as well, which this cannot. They also tend to be easier to move around, but the Smokin Tex is not only fairly heavy (clocking in at around 50 lbs.) but awkward to grip with its boxy, safe-like design. This thing really could have used some convenient gripping handles on the sides; it would make a great “travel” smoker if it weren’t such a pain to move around.

What we didn’t like

It’s almost easier to just get two people to carry the thing if you’re going more than about 30 feet with it.
